More information has just come to light in the ongoing trademark dispute between*Apple, Inc. and display maker Proview Technology. In response to a recent press release by Proview Shenzhen chairman Yang Rongshan, Apple is threatening to sue for defamation if the Chinese company doesn’t stop making what they are stating is false claims in regards to the trademark ownership.
IDG News reported that sources familiar with the matter supplied the news blog with a copy of the letter from Apple. “It is inappropriate to release information contrary to the facts to the media, especially when such disclosures have the effect of wrongfully causing damage to Apple’s reputation,” Apple’s letter states.
In the letter, Apple also ascertains that Yang knew of the talks between the Taiwanese subsidiary and Apple’s British liaison for the Mainland Chinese trademark rights and Proview headquarters negotiated and approved that deal. Yang’s press release contradicted Apple’s stance and, although evidence has been made public that supports Apple’s side, Proview Technology is still claiming that it retains trademark ownership in the country.
Proview recently won a lawsuit against Apple in the southern providence of Guangdong, which is the second in Mainland China that the company has won. It looks like Apple has decided to stop being polite to Proview. With this threat, it may become evident that the struggling company has bitten off more than it can chew in an attempt to take on Apple’s huge and powerful law department.
